An Epic Wrap up PART THREE: the final installment

Well, the epicness of the trip was starting to wind down, and I was really looking forward to spending some time in Naples for the rest of the week.  Talayna immediately put me to work doing little handyman things around the house while she was at work, and I got to spend a lot of quality time with the greatest dog ever...Barney (her 6yr old Labradoodle).  The dude is awesome, and when he looks at you, he is looking into your soul.  What a sweetie, its too bad he was a little under the weather =(

The rest of the week was spent watching a bunch of complete ridiculousness take place in the gym, in the water, on the beach, on the road, on the bike, on the obstacle course, and pretty much anywhere else Talayna decided to grace with her presence, hahah!  She is a monster, and I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen someone as dedicated to ANYTHING throughout my various athletic endeavors!  I've been around the block a few times in a few different circles of freakishness, and I am extremely confident with that statement, and I chose my words wisely.  Talayna Fortunato has put in more hard work (good, smart hard work) than any athlete I have ever come across.  That would include MULTIPLE Olympians, Gold Medalists, World Champions, NCAA Champions and All-Americans, etc...etc...etc... the list is long, and she is at the top, all alone, with the runner-up in a distant second place.  I am truly in awe, and have been inspired to dig deep for the first time to see if there is any talent left in this old sack of bones that I've become, hahah!  Time to get serious, I suppose, lol =)

So, the rest of the trip was a bit of a blur, and the time passed FAR too quickly.  I might have done a bike ride or two, and I might have enjoyed my time in Naples as much as anytime I can remember.  Maybe someday I'll have the chance to go back, maybe someday...

Just your TYPICAL Naples sunset...

She wanted to see the beach, too ;)  Don't worry, she was CARRIED!

"Son-of-a....  do I really have to leave??"

Bye, bye...

I'm guessing my 4th of July scenery was better than yours...just sayin'  ;)

Jennifer was the bomb

Jonas was one of my Naples favorites

Sunset at the beach on the 4th, need I say more?

"Your gun is sticking into my hip..."

Talayna took me past the Master Bait and Tackle store, but it was closed =(

Last night in Naples, just in time for one more sunset.

3 bikes loaded, and sad to leave.  Chattanooga here I come.

So, next year, my next Epic Journey of Epicness is gonna have a hard time topping this one...I might need to recruit some help...WHO'S WITH ME?!?!?!  =)

An Epic Wrap up PART TWO

I headed back towards Nashville on the way back through Chattanooga, and finally wound up at Six Flags White Water in Atlanta on Monday morning. I met my friends Paula and Jessica there, rode some slides, worked on my tan (well, depends on whose idea of a "tan" you use, haha), and had a blast. After saying goodbye to those lovely ladies, I met up with Clint again. It has been awesome to hang out with him so much over the last couple months. Between the Dick Lane Velodrome in Atlanta, and having Clint down there...I really don't have an excuse to be away from there too long, hahah!

So, Tuesday had more Track racing in store, and Clint and another friend Josh were psyched to check out the action. We raced the Kilo and a 4k pursuit, and both went very well. I made a couple mental notes about each event, and was really welcomed into the Track racing circle that night by a number of the racers in attendance. Two of the better riders asked me to race with them in the Team Sprint at the end of the evening, which was a huge compliment, and an even more hugerer learing experience. WOW! Track racing is a BLAST!!! I think I wound up with the 3rd fastest Kilo time (even though I was CRAAAAZY spun out with the wrong gear), and the 2nd fastest 4k. The 4k pursuit will more than likely prove to be my bread and butter...5 minutes of  P-A-I-N......

Wednesday morning arrived, and I was on the road to Naples. The drive was long, but some rockin jams kept me psyched. On the way, I got a text from Talayna asking if I liked Craig Morgan (the country singer)....my response..."DUH!?!!" She had scored a couple tickets from a friend at work, and we'd be hanging out at a kick ass concert in a few hours =) I made it into Naples in time to catch the last half hour of her workout at Crossfit Redline. The owner Anthony DiSarro was there, and it was awesome chatting with him! He and his wife Alison treated Talayna and I to dinner before the concert, and we all had a fantastic time. First night in Naples, and the bar had been set pretty high =)

Thursday may or may not have involved some Triathlon training, and me kicking Talayna's ass on a cargo net climb...the jury is still out on that one...

Friday I headed down to Fort Lauderdale to race at the Florida Elite State Track Cycling Championships (wow, that's a mouthfull!) in the flying 200m, then the match sprints...not exactly my specialty, but...gotta get better somehow. Wound up cutting almost a second off of my flying 200...I think I wound up 7th...

Winding up to speed in turn 2 before hitting the line for the start of the Flying 200m

Exiting turn 4 at close to 40mph and approaching the finish of the flying 200m

Playing the tactical games during the match sprints

My AWESOME cheering section!!  =)

Friday's track session ended pretty late, but not so late that I couldn't enjoy a meal with Aunt Mary, and my uncles Tom and Steve. Heck, I even had time to drive up to Boca Raton and hang out with Jamie Bennett for a couple hours! What a great day!

Saturday arrived, and Jamie and I got coffee and bagels before going to his sister Andrea's house to visit with her and their mom, Pat. Another couple great hours spent visiting with some of the best folks around =) Next, I'd be joining Uncle Steve and my Grandma for lunch down in Ft Lauderdale, and that lunch turned into another couple hour visit with 2 people I wish I could see more frequently. And, finally, it was time to hammer out another race on the track on Saturday night. This time, it was gonna be a little more than a minute of pain...The KILO... Well...lets just say that the legs weren't fond of what I was asking them to do, and they pretty much told me to go "bleep" myself precisely 1 lap into the 3 lap race...cue extreme pain and sufferring for the 50 seconds that followed my nuclear explosion...I called it a night, and decided that burning the candle from all 12 ends was probably gonna be my undoing before the trip was over. So, I watched the Points race from trackside before heading back up to Boca to hang with Jamie for the night...

This was the points race I bailed on.  What you are watching is 2 guys sprint for 1st and 2nd, while the rest of the group hammers into the home stretch for 3rd.  There is a sprint like this every 5 laps, and the race was 60 laps total...

Sunday would start with meeting the WHOLE Florida family for church followed by brunch, and that was a really special treat. It is so rare for me to see so many of my Aunts, Uncles, and cousins!!! So that was very cool. After brunch, I spent some more time hanging out with Uncle Steve before getting back on the road to Naples. I pretty much went straight to the beach, then was treated to an amazing dinner at Anthony and Alison DiSarro's. Wow, do they know how to COOK!!! What a production, thank you just doesn't seem sufficient. WOW.

OK, the conclusion of the trip will follow shortly...  ;)

An Epic Wrap up PART ONE...

SO, for the last 2 weeks I've been racking up the miles in my van, and on my road, mountain, and track bikes while on a journey of truly epic proportions. The planning of said epicness never actually took shape, and the trip just sort of kept evolving, hahah...TOTALLY not the way I usally roll! Anyways, I was talking to my friend Talayna one night and decided that she needed some company...but she lives in NAPLES FREAKIN FLORIDA!!! Ha! oh well, I hadn't seen her in more than 10 years, and this was likely going to be the only chance I was going to have to make the trip. She was right in the middle of tapering for the Crossfit Games that will be held July 13-15th in Los Angeles, and I figured having a distraction around would be exactly what she needed to fine tune things...well, maybe not really... But, the trip just wouldn't be nearly crazy enough if there wasn't a fair amount of bike racing and shenanigans thrown in there...so heres how things ended up going down...

Started things off in Chattanooga, packed the car with 3 bikes, a couple sets of wheels, tools, a wheelie cooler, cycling kits galore, some clean clothes, and a whole lotta whoop ass =) Cruised to Nashville to visit some friends Thursday the 21st of June and had a great time...
This may, or may not have happened, bahaha!!!

Friday arrives and I meet my parents for lunch in Nashville as well as some old family friends that I hadn't seen in too many years. It was really nice to catch up and eat some great food with super folks. After lunch, my parents rolled with me to Memphis for the remainder of the weekend. The plan for Memphis was to meet my friend Joe Swanson at the Stanky Creek mtb trails for a pre-ride of the race courses on friday afternoon. Joe was THE MAN! He has the trails completely dialed in, and we cruised the loops at about 10mph while catching up and chatting the whole way. What an awesome little trail system Stanky Creek is!!! After the ride I met up with my parents at my brother Andy's house and we all went out to dinner before meeting up with Andy's wife Gillian later on. Somehow as the evening progressed, we decided that a 6am 40 mile road ride would be a brilliant idea, hahaha! Well, I wasn't scheduled to race until 3pm, so that wouldnt be a problem =)

Saturday we rode in the AM, visited all morning, and then I saddled up to race in the afternoon. The TT was a lot of fun, and I was able to take the win just ahead of my Cysco Cycles team mate Aaron Smith who finished 2nd. GO TEAM CYSCO! Saturday night was already planned out, and we went down to Beale St for dinner and drinks with more of our Memphis friends. Somewhere in all that, we wound up taking a $40 cab ride home and the cabbie had to wake my brother and I up once we arrived at his place, LOL! awesome! and I'd be racing the XC event in about 8 hours =)

Coming out of the gully during the TT

Sunday's XC race unfolded just like all the others. Kill the start, get the holeshot, and set a pace that no one is going to be able to hold for very long...well...this time, the guy in second made me suffer on the front for 30 freakin minutes before he cracked. Damn, that hurt. The power meter says that first 30 minutes was at 340 watts...on a mountain bike, in the woods, that is some pain...but, thankfully he did finally crack, and I was able to set a steady pace for the rest of the race to secure another win for the Cysco Cycles Team =) I think these were wins #4 and #5 for the year...

Took this Log Fly-over WAAAYY too hot on Lap #1 and overshot the landing, hahah! Whoopsy ;)

Stay tuned for the updates from the MIDDLE section of the Epic Journey of Epicness...
